Shireshead 121-8  Westgate 78-8

Early season runs are notoriously hard to come by at Westgate and this truism was vindicated as Shireshead 2ndteam claimed 10 points on a day that produced only 198 runs but saw Shireshead an umpire’s decision away from a deserved 15 pointer.

Twiname received a pea roller that only his pads could repel but Bleasedale confidently progressed to 17 but it was Jake Gould and Adam Murphy who showed great maturity in their shot selection and great aplomb in their careful defensive play. They ran between the wickets in a way that no other pairing throughout the whole day could manage and stroked loose balls adeptly.

Gould made 32 but Murphy continued through a mini mid order collapse with Coulton being bowled for 1 by de Silva with the ball of the century and Park woefully mistiming a wide long hop for a duck. Murphy eventually caught for 42 trying to up the momentum and the innings ended on a competitive 121 for 8. Early wickets were a must.

Twiname’s mid match team talk was one of liaisons with Diddy Men and local bathroom shenanigans but he also reinforced the need for good basics and high intensity.

After two overs Westgate were 2 for 2 and Twiname’s team talk was being realized. Weir and Taylor cleaned up Carter and Webster respectively but from then on only 2 Westgate batsmen made double figures. Dave Hannigan (34 not out) was the obdurate fulcrum of the innings who eventually prove Shireshead’s nemesis.

Sid Gani was caught in spectacular fashion by Park but 2 mid innings ducks off the bowling of Bleasedale (3 for 18 off 12) one a sharp caught being by the immaculate ‘Chirper’ Burns and another fine catch by England international Tom Wilson at mid-off. Da Silva began to forge a partnership with Hannigan and looked to be ‘too good for Shireshead’ until he was caught expertly by Gould in the deep for a formidable 9. The final over ensued with 8 wickets down and Westgate floundering on 78. Park bowled Islam with his first ball and had a fierce shout for lbw on the very last ball against Hannigan but to no avail. 10 points gladly earned and a sterling performance by Twiname’s men.
