The most exciting thing to have emerged at Shireshead since the return of cricket has been the performance and attitude of our young players. This was underlined by a fantastic win away against local rivals Galgate 1st XI on Saturday.
Electing to field first, superb bowling by the trio of left arm pace bowlers left Galgate reeling. Only Dave Morgan with 33 and former ‘Header’ Wil Greenwood (30) could deal with the visitors’ attack. This was led by Thomas McCartney who took 4 wickets from his 9 overs for just 24 runs. Eddie Haigh and Ernie Collinson bowled with great control, each taking a deserved wicket. Aiden Wier claimed 3 wickets for only 18 runs also; all Shireshead bowlers aged 16 or under.
Shireshead openers Colin Twiname and Ernie Collinson have an age difference of over 40 years but both fell cheaply. Dave Sloan got a start but got to 14 and got out and it was left to Paul ‘Coults’ Coulton (40) and all rounder Eddie Haigh (32) to take Shireshead close to the target plus a sensible 15 not out from teenager (and left arm bowler !) James Sutcliffe to lead Mark Sutcliffe’s men to victory.
