Shireshead 2nd XI capped a wonderful season with a thrilling victory against Westgate 2nds to claim the overall League title for the 2020 season. Shireshead won the toss and elected to bat first on a typical Carnforth ‘road’ posting a total of 175 in their 40 overs. The key contributor was Jake Agar with 65 not out with further contributions from Si Gould (35), Jake Gould with 28 and Mike Mead (19). Agar batted with skill and energy but it was building partnerships with those around him that amassed a competitive total. Ex ‘Header’ Danny Wilkinson proved a handful, posting figures of 10 overs two for only 23 but Jacob Vaughn took four wickets in his seven overs.
Despite the early loss of Tattersall, Westgate’s Hannigan and Vaughan built a 50+ partnership before Vaughan was caught and bowled by Mead (1-34), and Hannigan was trapped lbw by Paul Yates (2-12). Enter old boys Danny Wilkinson and Stephen Creed. Creed in particular showed the stroke play that underlined his bygone reputation, hitting four sixes and progressing Westgate into the box seat. Needing just six runs with eight wickets down up stepped Jake Agar to remove Frith and Bradshaw finishing with figures of 4 for 27 from his 9.2 overs.
This capped a tremendous season for Gould’s team and the play off victory reflected the story of the season with many players contributing to the success.
