Westgate U13s v Shireshead U13s – League
May 25
With the sun beating down Shireshead played their first league match of the season away against a strong Westgate side.
The home side batted first, and opening batmen J. Frith matched the Shireshead opening attack of Will Gaskell and Oliver Wilkinson, before retiring on a well-judged 25 which included four fours.
Rory Briggs also chipped in with a more considered 25 to leave his side 103 –3 from their 20 overs. Wickets went to Wilkinson, Jamie Butlin and Thomas McCartney.
Shireshead’s fielding was also very impressive with the one chance offered taken and the team saving runs throughout the innings.
Facing a run chase of five an over, Shireshead carefully paced their reply with openers Gaskell and Wilkinson making runs against Briggs and Frith. Wilkinson batted patiently through the innings, as Gaskell fell for 19.
James Sutcliffe then smashed a quick 18 with a series of boundaries before he fell caught.
Eddie Haigh then joined Wilkinson, who finished on 22, for the final overs and played beautifully for his 13 which steered his side to victory with an over to spare.
